Golf square lights, a controversial change

The American Golf In 1980 and 1981 the VW Golf presents the first aesthetics update A substantial change that didn’t obtained the acceptance desired from part of the public, automobile critics and VW executives.

Unfortunately James Mclernon, former engineer of Chevrolet and manufacture director in VW, tried to americanized the original Golf by installing a smoother suspension and long rear lights making the car visually higher but narrower.

 

The lights were higher and the car changed to the characteristic squared grill. An Executive from VW said that “the car had a great similarity with the chevy Malibu” A different Golf, that only existed in USA, Canada and México; a new face; a controversial redesign.
